A Glimpse into Teaching Internship: Day 22 at St. John's Model HSS Nalanchira
As a student teacher, every day in the classroom brings new challenges, learning opportunities, and a chance to grow both personally and professionally. Today marked the 22nd day of my teaching internship at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School in Nalanchira, and it was a day filled with exciting experiences and unexpected opportunities.
Morning in the Classroom: Teaching Chromatography with ICT Aids
My focus of the day was my first-period class with eighth-grade students, where I was tasked with teaching them about chromatography using ICT aids. Chromatography is a fascinating topic in chemistry, and I was eager to share this knowledge with my students.
I started the class by explaining the basic principles of chromatography, emphasizing its relevance to daily life experiences. The use of ICT aids added an interactive dimension to the lesson, making it more engaging and comprehensible for the students. Visual representations and animations helped illustrate complex concepts, making it easier for the students to grasp the ideas behind chromatography.
As a student teacher, it was crucial for me to maintain a balance between theory and practical application. To achieve this, I conducted a simple chromatography experiment using readily available materials like filter paper, ink, and water. The students were enthusiastic about the hands-on activity, and it was rewarding to see their faces light up as they observed the separation of colors on the filter paper.
Review Questions and Follow-up Activity
To reinforce their understanding of chromatography, I assigned review questions for homework. These questions encouraged students to think critically about the topic and apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios:
Explain the principle of chromatography and its applications in everyday life.
Why is it important to choose the right solvent for chromatography?
Give an example of how chromatography is used in forensic science.
In addition to the review questions, I proposed a follow-up activity for the students. They were asked to conduct a chromatography experiment at home using different types of markers or inks and report their findings. This activity aimed to foster curiosity and independent learning among the students, encouraging them to explore science beyond the classroom.
A Unique Opportunity: Joining the Study Tour to the Air Force Academy
In a delightful turn of events, I was offered the chance to accompany students on a study tour to the Air Force Academy as a supporting staff member. This unexpected opportunity allowed me to interact with students outside the classroom and contribute to their overall educational experience.
As a supporting staff member, I was responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of the students during the trip. It was a valuable experience to witness the students' enthusiasm and curiosity as they explored the Air Force Academy, learning about aviation, technology, and the dedication of those who serve in the armed forces.
Conclusion
Day 22 of my teaching internship at St. John's Model HSS Nalanchira was a day filled with meaningful experiences. Teaching chromatography with ICT aids and relating it to daily life experiences was both challenging and rewarding. The opportunity to join the study tour added a new dimension to my internship, allowing me to connect with students in a different setting.
As a student teacher, I continue to learn and grow with each passing day. These experiences not only shape my teaching style but also reinforce my passion for education. I look forward to the remaining days of my internship and the knowledge and insights they will undoubtedly bring
