Teaching Diffusion with ICT Aids and Nurturing Peer Observation Skills

 As a student teacher embarking on my teaching internship at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School in Nalanchira, every day brings new experiences, challenges, and opportunities for growth. On my 12th day in this educational institution, I had the privilege of teaching a class on the topic of diffusion in chemistry. This day was particularly exciting as it allowed me to utilize ICT aids, connect theoretical knowledge with real-life examples, conduct a classroom experiment, and undergo classroom observation by my mentor teacher. Additionally, I had the chance to support my fellow intern, Sr. Deepa, during her peer observation. Here's a detailed account of my experiences and reflections from this significant day.


Teaching Diffusion with ICT Aids


The focal point of the day was my first-period class with 8th-grade students, where I was assigned the task of teaching the concept of diffusion in chemistry. To make the topic engaging and relatable, I decided to incorporate ICT (Information and Communication Technology) aids into my teaching strategy. I used multimedia presentations, videos, and interactive simulations to explain the concept, making it visually appealing and easier for students to grasp.


Connecting Theory with Real-life Examples


To ensure that the students truly understood the concept of diffusion, I made an effort to relate it to their daily lives. I presented real-life examples, such as the diffusion of fragrance in a room or the spread of ink in water, to help them connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications. This approach not only made the topic more interesting but also emphasized its relevance in their everyday experiences.


Demonstrating the Experiment in the Classroom


One of the highlights of the day was conducting a hands-on experiment in the classroom to demonstrate diffusion. I used a simple yet effective setup, allowing students to witness diffusion in action. In the afternoon, my general teacher, who serves as my mentor throughout this internship, came to observe my class. This observation served as a valuable learning experience, helping me grow as a future educator.

In the spirit of collaboration and peer support, I also had the privilege of assisting my batchmate, Sr. Deepa, during her peer observation session. This allowed me to gain insights into her teaching style, provide feedback, and foster a sense of camaraderie among us as aspiring educators. Peer observation is a powerful tool for professional development, and I was grateful for the chance to participate.
