Reflecting on My Teaching Internship at St. John's Model HSS Nalanchira: Day 6
As I continue my journey as a student teacher at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School in Nalanchira, each day brings new challenges and learning experiences. Today, I would like to share my reflections on the sixth day of my teaching internship, a day that revolved around teaching class 8 chemistry.
Morning Excitement:
The anticipation was palpable as I prepared for my first period in class 8. Today's topic was "Changes of State of Matter," a fundamental concept in chemistry. My goal for the day was to make this complex subject engaging and understandable for my students, and I decided to leverage the power of ICT aids to accomplish this.
Incorporating Technology:
In the classroom, I used various ICT tools to explain the concept of changes of state of matter. I displayed interactive diagrams and animations on the projector to help students visualize the transition from solid to liquid to gas. I also used short video clips to illustrate these transformations and emphasize the real-world applications.
Relating Theory to Real-Life:
To ensure that the topic resonated with my students, I related the concept of state changes to their daily lives. We discussed how ice melts into water when left out, or how water boils when heated. It was heartening to see the students' eyes light up as they began to connect the dots between the theory and their everyday experiences.
Hands-On Learning:
To further solidify their understanding, I conducted a simple experiment in class. I demonstrated how the addition of heat can change a solid substance (ice) into a liquid (water) and eventually into a gas (steam). The students were captivated as they witnessed the transformation right before their eyes.
Review and Follow-Up:
After the experiment, I handed out review questions to gauge their comprehension. This exercise helped me identify areas that needed further clarification. Additionally, I assigned a follow-up activity that required students to list examples of state changes they observe at home or in their surroundings.
Yoga Day Celebration:
As part of my responsibilities, I also had the privilege of organizing and conducting a Yoga Day celebration in the school. Yoga is not just about physical well-being; it is also about mental and emotional balance. I guided the students through various yoga poses and relaxation exercises, emphasizing the importance of holistic health.
Supporting My Peers:
In the afternoon, I had the opportunity to support my batchmate, Sr. Jomcy, in her peer observation session. This experience allowed me to see teaching from a different perspective, offering valuable insights into different teaching styles and approaches. It was a reminder that as student teachers, we are all learning from each other.
Closing Thoughts:
Reflecting on my sixth day of teaching internship at St. John's Model HSS Nalanchira, I am reminded of the importance of adaptability and creativity in the classroom. Incorporating technology, real-life examples, and hands-on experiments helped me make a complex topic accessible to my students. Furthermore, participating in school-wide events like Yoga Day and supporting my peers during observations has enriched my overall teaching experience. I look forward to the challenges and growth that each new day will bring as I continue my journey as a student teacher at this remarkable institution.
