My Teaching Internship Journey: Day 7 at St. John's Model HSS, Nalanchira
Title: My Teaching Internship Journey: Day 7 at St. John's Model HSS, Nalanchira
Date: September 2, 2023
As a student teacher on the seventh day of my teaching internship at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School in Nalanchira, I was both excited and nervous about taking my first period with a class of eighth-grade students. The focus of the day was teaching them about distillation and fractional distillation in chemistry. With the support of ICT aids and real-life examples, I embarked on this teaching adventure.
Getting Started with ICT Aids:
My morning began with preparations for the day's lesson. I had carefully crafted a lesson plan that incorporated the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) aids to make the learning experience more engaging and interactive. I believed that using technology would not only enhance their understanding but also make the subject more relatable.
Teaching Distillation and Fractional Distillation:
The topic of the day was distillation and fractional distillation, a fundamental concept in chemistry. I began by explaining the core principles and processes involved in distillation, making use of visual aids and animations to simplify the complex concepts. Fractional distillation was introduced as a more advanced technique, and I ensured that the students could differentiate between the two methods effectively.
Relating the Topic to Daily Life:
One of my primary objectives was to demonstrate the practical relevance of distillation and fractional distillation in our daily lives. I used examples such as water purification and the production of alcoholic beverages to connect the theoretical knowledge to real-world applications. This approach helped the students grasp the significance of the topic better.
Review Questions and Follow-Up Activity:
After covering the theoretical aspects, I presented a set of review questions to assess the students' comprehension. These questions ranged from basic to more complex, ensuring that all students could participate and feel challenged according to their abilities. To reinforce their learning, I assigned a follow-up activity where they had to research and present a real-world application of distillation or fractional distillation. This encouraged independent thinking and research skills among the students.
Celebrating Reading Day with a Letter Tree:
In the afternoon, the school was abuzz with excitement as it was 'Reading Day.' As part of the celebration, student teachers from our college collaborated to create a beautiful "Letter Tree" in the school courtyard. This interactive installation allowed students to share their favorite quotes from books, fostering a love for literature and reading among the students. It was heartwarming to witness the enthusiasm with which the students participated in this creative endeavor.
Supporting Discipline in School:
Throughout the day, I also continued to play a role in maintaining discipline within the school premises. This included ensuring that students were punctual, respecting school rules, and fostering a positive learning environment. While discipline can sometimes be challenging, it is an essential aspect of creating a conducive atmosphere for effective teaching and learning.
Closing Thoughts:
My seventh day of teaching internship at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School was a fulfilling experience. It was gratifying to see the students engage with the subject matter, connect it to their lives, and participate in the Reading Day celebrations with such enthusiasm. This journey is helping me grow not only as a teacher but also as a responsible and empathetic educator who understands the importance of nurturing discipline alongside imparting knowledge. I look forward to the upcoming days of my internship, knowing
that each one will bring new opportunities for growth and learning, both for my students and myself.
