My Teaching Internship Experience at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School, Nalanchira

Becoming a student teacher and embarking on my teaching internship at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School in Nalanchira was an exhilarating journey. It offered me a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and my first day as an intern teacher was a memorable one.

Day 1: Introducing Chapter 8 in Chemistry

On the first day of my internship, I was assigned the first period of the day to introduce Chapter 8 in the Chemistry class for 8th graders. As I entered the classroom, I felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness. The students were curious and attentive, and their eyes were fixed on me as I stood before them.

I began by introducing myself and sharing my background as a student teacher. It was essential to establish a connection with the students to create a positive learning environment. After a brief introduction, I delved into the topic at hand. The chapter was about chemical reactions, a fundamental concept in chemistry.

I started with a real-life example of a simple chemical reaction that they could relate to, like rusting of iron. This helped me grab their attention and make the subject matter more engaging. I also used visual aids and diagrams on the blackboard to illustrate the concepts. Encouraging questions and discussions, I ensured that the students were actively involved in the learning process.

Advice from the Concerned Teacher

Throughout the class, my mentor and the concerned teacher for the class observed my teaching style and interaction with the students. After the session, she provided me with valuable feedback. She highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between being approachable and maintaining authority in the classroom. Her advice was instrumental in shaping my teaching approach during the entire internship.

The concerned teacher also emphasized the significance of being well-prepared and organized. Planning the lesson meticulously and having a clear objective in mind helped me maintain control over the class and ensured that the students were on the same page.

Supporting My Chemistry Teacher with ICT Aids

In addition to teaching, I had the opportunity to assist my chemistry teacher in preparing ICT aids for future lessons. We worked together to create presentations, interactive quizzes, and animations that would make learning more engaging for the students. This experience not only enhanced my technological skills but also gave me insights into the effort and creativity required in modern teaching methods.

Conclusion

My first day as a student teacher at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School in Nalanchira was a rich learning experience. It allowed me to put my theoretical knowledge into practice and gave me valuable insights into the art of teaching. The advice from my concerned teacher was instrumental in shaping my teaching approach, and the opportunity to work on ICT aids expanded my horizons as an educator.

As I continued my teaching internship, I looked forward to more such experiences and the chance to make a positive impact on the young minds in the classroom. This journey at St. John's was not only about teaching but also about personal growth and development, and I was excited about the opportunities that lay ahead in my teaching career.
