My Student Teaching Journey: Day 5 at St. John's Model HSS Nalanchira
As I continue my journey through my student teaching internship at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School in Nalanchira, every day presents new opportunities for growth and learning. On the 5th day of my internship, I had a unique and enriching experience that I'd like to share with you.
Morning Buzz: Anticipation and Nervousness
The day began with a mix of anticipation and nervousness as I knew I was scheduled to teach my first class independently. My focus for the day was on Class 9 Physics, where I was tasked with explaining the concept of viscosity using ICT (Information and Communication Technology) aids. This was a significant challenge for me as I had to not only deliver the content effectively but also relate it to daily life examples to make it relatable for the students.
Teaching with ICT Aids: Bringing Viscosity to Life
Walking into the classroom, I could feel the students' curiosity in the air. They were excited to see the projector and other ICT equipment set up. I started the lesson by defining viscosity and its importance in the context of fluids. To make the topic more engaging, I used interactive animations and videos to illustrate the concept. The students were captivated by the visuals, and it helped them grasp the idea more effectively.
Real-Life Connection: A Sticky Situation
To relate viscosity to their daily lives, I presented a simple yet relatable example - pouring honey and water from a height. I asked the students to predict which substance would flow more slowly and why. After discussing their predictions, we conducted a live experiment using honey and water. The students watched in amazement as the honey moved at a snail's pace compared to the water, making the concept of viscosity crystal clear.
Review Questions: Assessing Understanding
After the demonstration, I engaged the students with review questions to gauge their understanding. This allowed me to address any misconceptions and reinforce key points. The students' participation was encouraging, and they seemed to grasp the concept well.
Follow-up Activity: Applying Knowledge
To ensure that the students retained the knowledge, I assigned a follow-up activity. I asked them to find two more examples from their daily lives that demonstrated viscosity and prepare short presentations for the next class. This not only reinforced the lesson but also encouraged critical thinking and research skills.
Lunchtime: Supporting the School's Mission
In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I had the opportunity to support the school's mission of providing mid-day meals to the students. Along with the school staff, I helped distribute nutritious meals to the students. This experience gave me a deeper understanding of the school's commitment to the holistic development of its students.
Conclusion: A Day of Growth
As I reflect on my 5th day as a student teacher at St. John's Model HSS Nalanchira, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Teaching viscosity through ICT aids and real-life examples was a rewarding experience, and I witnessed the students' enthusiasm for learning. Moreover, contributing to the school's mid-day meal program was a reminder of the school's broader mission and the importance of community involvement in education.
Every day as a student teacher brings new challenges and opportunities for growth, and I am eager to continue this journey of learning and teaching at St. John's Model HSS Nalanchira.
