My Journey as a Student Teacher: Reflections on Teaching Practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom
As a student teacher, my journey through teaching practice has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Each day brings new experiences, lessons, and insights that shape me into a better educator. Today, I'd like to share my reflections on the 34th day of my teaching practice at St. Mary's Higher Secondary School in Pattom, where my primary focus was conducting a diagnostic test for Class 9 physics on the topic of potential difference.
The Day's Lesson: Conducting a Diagnostic Test
The 34th day of my teaching practice was a pivotal one. It was my chance to assess the students' understanding of the topic 'potential difference' in physics. This topic is a fundamental concept in the subject and serves as a foundation for more advanced topics. I had meticulously prepared the test, ensuring that it covered key concepts and could effectively gauge the students' grasp of the subject matter.
My main goals for the test were to:
Evaluate the students' comprehension of potential difference.
Identify areas where students needed further clarification.
Provide constructive feedback to help them improve.
The classroom atmosphere was filled with anticipation. The students were engaged and seemed eager to tackle the test. This enthusiasm was encouraging, and it motivated me to ensure that the assessment was fair and comprehensive.
Maintaining Discipline During Yoga Test
In addition to the physics test, another significant task for the day was to maintain discipline during the yoga test. This responsibility emphasized the importance of not only teaching academic content but also fostering discipline and holistic well-being in students. It was an opportunity to create a conducive environment for both academic and non-academic activities.
As a student teacher, maintaining discipline during activities like yoga tests requires a balance of firmness and empathy. I was mindful of the need to respect the students' physical and mental boundaries while ensuring that the session remained focused and productive.
Challenges Faced and Lessons Learned
Throughout the day, I encountered several challenges. Some students struggled with the physics concepts, while others faced difficulties in maintaining focus during the yoga test. It was a reminder that teaching is not just about delivering content but also understanding and addressing the diverse needs of students.
Here are some key lessons I took away from the experience:
Adaptability: Teaching often requires adapting to unexpected situations. Whether it's a student's difficulty with a concept or disruptions during a test, the ability to adapt and respond calmly is essential.
Empathy: Understanding students' individual challenges and needs is crucial. Empathy allows us to tailor our teaching methods and support to help each student succeed.
Discipline with Compassion: Maintaining discipline doesn't mean being rigid or punitive. It's about creating an environment where students feel respected and encouraged to do their best.
Continuous Improvement: Teaching is a journey of continuous improvement. Reflecting on each day's experiences, both successes and challenges, is vital for personal and professional growth.
Completing Records and Seeking Guidance
After the day's activities, I dedicated time to completing my records and seeking feedback from my supervising teachers. Their guidance and insights have been invaluable throughout my teaching practice. They not only help me refine my teaching methods but also provide emotional support and encouragement.
As I continue my journey as a student teacher, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow at St. Mary's HSS Pattom. Each day brings new experiences, and I am excited to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Teaching is a noble profession, and I am committed to giving my best to help shape the future of these young minds.
