A Day in the Life of a Student Teacher: 32nd Day of Teaching Practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom

As a student teacher, every day in the classroom brings a unique set of experiences and challenges. However, the 32nd day of my teaching practice at St. Mary's Higher Secondary School in Pattom was particularly memorable. On this day, I had the opportunity to teach a class of ninth-grade students about waves in sound using ICT (Information and Communication Technology). Additionally, I received my final observation by my optional teacher. In this blog post, I would like to share my experiences and reflections on this eventful day.

The Classroom Environment

St. Mary's HSS Pattom is known for its academic excellence and commitment to providing quality education. The classroom I was assigned to was equipped with modern facilities, including a projector and a computer, which I intended to use to enhance my teaching with ICT resources.

Teaching Waves in Sound Using ICT

Teaching the concept of waves in sound to ninth-grade students was a challenging task. Sound is an abstract concept, and waves, even more so. To make this topic engaging and comprehensible, I decided to incorporate ICT tools into my lesson plan. I had prepared a PowerPoint presentation with interactive animations and audio clips that would help the students visualize and understand sound waves better.

The class began with a brief introduction to the topic, followed by a discussion on the properties of sound waves. I used the projector to display the animations, which showed how sound waves travel through different mediums. The students were actively engaged, and the visual aids made the abstract concept much more tangible for them. We discussed various examples and real-life applications of sound waves, which further piqued their interest.

During the lesson, I encouraged students to ask questions and participate in discussions. I was thrilled to see their enthusiasm and curiosity, as they asked insightful questions about sound waves and their applications. The use of ICT not only made the class more interactive but also allowed me to address these questions effectively.

The Final Observation

After the lesson, it was time for my final observation by my optional teacher, who had been mentoring me throughout my teaching practice. The observation process was nerve-wracking, as it was a crucial evaluation of my teaching skills and classroom management. My optional teacher assessed my lesson plan, teaching methods, and the overall learning environment in the classroom.

To my relief, the feedback I received was largely positive. My optional teacher praised the use of ICT in the lesson, noting that it made the topic more engaging and accessible to the students. They also commended my classroom management skills and my ability to maintain discipline.

Supporting Tasks: Yoga Test

Apart from teaching, I had an additional responsibility on this day: to maintain discipline during a yoga test. St. Mary's HSS Pattom emphasizes holistic development, including physical fitness and mental well-being. The yoga test was an important part of this approach.

I ensured that the students followed the test instructions and maintained decorum during the test. This experience taught me the importance of being adaptable and multitasking as a teacher, as I had to switch from teaching mode to discipline mode seamlessly.

Conclusion

The 32nd day of my teaching practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom was a day filled with diverse experiences. Teaching waves in sound using ICT was a rewarding challenge, and I was pleased with the engagement and curiosity of the students. The positive feedback from my optional teacher provided validation for my efforts in the classroom.

Additionally, my involvement in maintaining discipline during the yoga test highlighted the multifaceted role of a teacher beyond academics. It underscored the importance of creating a conducive and orderly learning environment.

As a student teacher, I continue to learn and grow with each passing day. My experience at St. Mary's HSS Pattom has been invaluable, and I look forward to more opportunities to refine my teaching skills and make a positive impact on my students' lives
