My Journey as a Student Teacher: Teaching Practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom
Introduction:
As a student teacher, the journey of teaching practice at St. Mary's Higher Secondary School in Pattom has been a truly enlightening experience. Each day brings forth new challenges, insights, and moments of growth. In this blog, I'd like to share my experiences from the 21st day of teaching practice, which was particularly memorable for me.
The 21st Day: An Introduction to Nitrogen
On this day, I was assigned to teach the 1st period to a class of 9th-grade students, focusing on the fascinating world of chemistry. The topic of the day was the introduction of nitrogen as a non-metal. I decided to make the class engaging by incorporating interesting videos and images to capture the students' attention.
Engaging Multimedia
To kickstart the lesson, I began by showing captivating videos and images related to nitrogen. These visual aids included videos of nitrogen's role in our atmosphere, its various forms, and its importance in the world of science and industry. The students were immediately intrigued, and their curiosity was piqued.
Review Questions
After the multimedia presentation, I posed some review questions to gauge the students' understanding. These questions were designed to encourage critical thinking and discussion:
What is nitrogen, and where is it found in abundance?
Can you name some common compounds that contain nitrogen?
Why is nitrogen important for plant growth?
How does nitrogen impact the environment, both positively and negatively?
Can you list some everyday applications of nitrogen?
Follow-Up Activities
To reinforce their learning, I organized a few follow-up activities:
Nitrogen Cycle Diagram: I asked the students to create a visual representation of the nitrogen cycle, highlighting its various stages and the importance of nitrogen in each phase.
Nitrogen Trivia Quiz: In teams, students participated in a fun quiz competition where they answered questions related to the lesson. This not only tested their knowledge but also made learning enjoyable.
General Observation by the Teacher
One of the most nerve-wracking moments during teaching practice is the observation by the supervising teacher. Fortunately, my general observation went well. The teacher commended the use of multimedia to make the lesson engaging and praised the variety of review questions and activities that I incorporated. The feedback I received was constructive and motivating.
Supporting Tasks: Mid-Day Meal Distribution
Aside from my teaching responsibilities, I also participated in supporting the school's mid-day meal distribution program. It was heartening to see how this initiative ensured that all students received a nutritious meal, promoting both physical health and attendance.
In conclusion, my teaching practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom has been a valuable experience filled with growth and learning. The 21st day was a memorable one, and it reinforced my passion for teaching. As I continue this journey, I look forward to more such moments of inspiration and fulfillment in the noble profession of education.
