My 19th Day of Teaching Practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom: Unveiling the Magic of Ozone in Class 9 Chemistry

As a student teacher at St. Mary's Higher Secondary School in Pattom, every day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth. On my 19th day of teaching practice, I was assigned to teach a chemistry class to ninth-graders. This day turned out to be both exhilarating and enlightening, as I embarked on a journey to make chemistry come alive in their daily lives.

Connecting with the Students

The class started with a burst of enthusiasm as I greeted my students with a friendly smile. I knew that teaching chemistry required not only knowledge but also a way to make it engaging. My objective for the day was to introduce the concept of ozone, a crucial topic in environmental chemistry. To make it more relatable, I decided to connect it with daily life activities.

Using Multimedia for Engagement

One of the most effective tools I employed was the use of multimedia. I began by showing intriguing videos and images of ozone in action. The visuals helped the students grasp the concept better and made the class more interactive. They were fascinated to see how ozone plays a vital role in purifying the air we breathe, both naturally and through technological applications.

Connecting Ozone to Daily Life

To further solidify the connection between ozone and daily life, I shared real-world examples. We discussed how ozone protects us from harmful UV rays and helps in water purification processes. I encouraged students to think about the ozone layer as Earth's sunscreen and how it impacts their lives.

Review Questions

After the initial presentation, I posed review questions to gauge their understanding:

What is ozone, and where is it found in the atmosphere?

How does ozone protect us from UV radiation?

Can you name one daily life activity where ozone is used for purification?

Follow-Up Activities

To reinforce their knowledge, I designed follow-up activities for the students:

Ozone Experiment: In the upcoming classes, students will get the chance to conduct a simple ozone experiment. They will create a mini "ozone generator" using household materials to understand its chemical properties better.

Ozone Layer Poster: I assigned a creative project where students will design posters depicting the importance of the ozone layer. This activity encourages artistic expression and deepens their understanding of the topic.

Supporting Discipline

Apart from teaching, another crucial aspect of my day was supporting discipline within the school. In the morning and evening, I assisted the senior teachers in managing student behavior and ensuring a conducive learning environment. This experience helped me appreciate the importance of maintaining discipline for effective teaching.

In conclusion, my 19th day of teaching practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom was a memorable one. It showcased the power of interactive teaching methods and the importance of connecting classroom concepts with real-life experiences. By making chemistry relatable and engaging, I hope to inspire a new generation of students to appreciate the wonders of science and their role in our daily lives
