A Journey in Teaching: Reflections on the 24th Day of Teaching Practice at St. Mary's HSS, Pattom

As a student teacher embarking on the journey of teaching practice at St. Mary's Higher Secondary School in Pattom, each day brings new challenges and exciting opportunities for growth. On the 24th day of my teaching practice, I had the privilege of teaching the first period in a class 9 Physics session. The lesson focused on understanding various instruments working in electric current through the use of captivating videos and images.

Engaging with Multimedia:

The primary goal of the day was to make learning about electric current and its associated instruments both engaging and informative for the students. To achieve this, I incorporated multimedia elements into my lesson plan. I used videos and images to visually demonstrate how various instruments, such as ammeters, voltmeters, and galvanometers, function in the context of electric current. This approach not only captured the students' attention but also helped them grasp complex concepts more effectively.

Review Questions:

After the lesson, I provided the students with review questions to consolidate their understanding of the material. These questions aimed to assess their comprehension and critical thinking skills:

What is electric current, and how is it measured?

Explain the function of an ammeter and a voltmeter.

Why is it essential to use a galvanometer in certain situations involving electric current?

Describe a real-life application where the knowledge of electric current and its instruments is crucial.

Follow-Up Activities:

To reinforce the concepts taught in the class and encourage hands-on learning, I proposed a few follow-up activities:

Circuit Building: Have students work in pairs to build simple circuits using batteries, resistors, and switches. This hands-on activity will help them apply their knowledge of electric current and instruments.

Electricity Safety Poster: Assign students to create posters emphasizing the importance of safety when working with electricity. This exercise not only reinforces their understanding but also promotes safety awareness.

Interview an Electrician: Encourage students to interview a local electrician to gain insights into the practical applications of electric current and its measurement instruments.

Observation by College Faculty:

An exciting aspect of the day was the presence of a faculty member from my college, specializing in physical science education. The observation provided valuable feedback and insights into my teaching methods, which will undoubtedly help me grow as a future educator. The constructive feedback and encouragement from my mentor were a source of motivation and reassurance.

Supporting Tasks:

Aside from my teaching responsibilities, I also had the opportunity to contribute to the school's science department. On this day, I assisted in cleaning the science lab. This seemingly mundane task played a significant role in fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere within the school community. It reminded me of the importance of teamwork and collaboration in the field of education.

In conclusion, the 24th day of my teaching practice at St. Mary's HSS, Pattom, was a day filled with meaningful experiences and growth opportunities. It reinforced the significance of innovative teaching methods, interactive learning, and the support of both peers and mentors in shaping the educational journey. Each day in the classroom brings new challenges and rewards, making the path to becoming an effective educator all the more fulfilling.
