My Journey as a Student Teacher: 17th-Day Experience at St. John's Model HSS, Nalanchira

As a student teacher, every day at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School in Nalanchira has been a learning experience. On the 17th day of my teaching internship, I had the opportunity to take my first period with a class of ninth graders. The focus of the day was teaching them about graphical representation in physics, specifically the velocity-time graph, using ICT aids. Additionally, our college organized an anti-drugs day, inaugurated by our esteemed college principal, Dr. Joju. This blog post will provide insights into my classroom experience and the significance of the anti-drugs day event.

Teaching Velocity-Time Graphs Using ICT Aids

The day began with a sense of excitement and nervousness as I prepared to introduce velocity-time graphs to my ninth-grade students. The topic was both crucial and challenging, and I had decided to integrate technology to make the concepts more engaging and accessible.

I started the class with a brief discussion on the importance of graphical representations in physics and how they help us understand motion better. Then, I introduced the concept of velocity-time graphs, explaining the basic principles and components. To make the topic come alive, I used ICT aids such as interactive simulations and videos.

Key Teaching Strategies:

Interactive Simulations: I used online simulations that allowed students to manipulate variables and observe how they affect the velocity-time graph. This hands-on approach helped students grasp the concepts more effectively.

Real-World Examples: I shared real-world examples and scenarios where velocity-time graphs are used, such as analyzing the motion of cars, athletes, or even amusement park rides. This made the topic relatable and interesting for the students.

Group Activities: To encourage active participation, I divided the class into small groups and gave them problems to solve using velocity-time graphs. This promoted collaboration and critical thinking.

Review Questions and Follow-up Activity

After the initial explanation and interactive session, I provided review questions and a follow-up activity to reinforce the concepts learned during the class:

Review Questions:

What is the significance of the slope of a velocity-time graph?

How can you determine an object's acceleration from its velocity-time graph?

Explain the difference between a horizontal line and a diagonal line on a velocity-time graph.

Follow-up Activity:

Each student was asked to find a real-world scenario and create their own velocity-time graph to represent it. They were encouraged to use online graphing tools or draw it by hand. This activity allowed them to apply their knowledge and think creatively.

Anti-Drugs Day Event

In addition to my teaching duties, our college organized an important event – Anti-Drugs Day. The event was inaugurated by our college principal, Dr. Joju, and aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse. As student teachers, we actively participated in organizing and conducting various activities during the event, including informative presentations, skits, and interactive discussions.

Dr. Joju's address emphasized the role of educational institutions in nurturing responsible and drug-free citizens. He urged students to stay away from drugs and make informed choices for a healthier future.

Conclusion

Day 17 of my teaching internship at St. John's Model HSS, Nalanchira, was filled with both professional growth and a sense of social responsibility. Teaching the complex topic of velocity-time graphs with the help of ICT aids was a rewarding experience, and the engagement of the students was a testament to the effectiveness of this approach. Additionally, participating in the Anti-Drugs Day event highlighted the broader role of educators in shaping not only academic but also social and ethical aspects of students' lives. This day served as a reminder that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge; it's about making a positive impact on the lives of young individuals
