Reflections of a Student Teacher: Teaching Practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom

As a student teacher at St. Mary's Higher Secondary School in Pattom, every day has been a learning experience filled with challenges, victories, and unforgettable moments. On the seventh day of my teaching practice, I had the privilege of teaching the fourth period to a class of ninth-grade students in the subject of Physics. The focus of the day was on electrical equipment, and I aimed to make the lesson engaging by incorporating intriguing videos and images while also relating the content to their daily activities. In addition to the core lesson, I had the opportunity to motivate another class during a free hour, further enriching my teaching experience.

Engaging the Class with Visual Aids:

The subject of electricity and electrical equipment can often be challenging for students to grasp. To make the topic more accessible and interesting, I decided to use a combination of videos and images. These multimedia resources not only captured the students' attention but also helped them visualize abstract concepts.

I began by showing a video explaining the basic principles of electricity, its importance in our daily lives, and how various electrical equipment works. The students were visibly intrigued, and their curiosity was piqued. I followed this with a series of captivating images that illustrated different types of electrical equipment, from simple light bulbs to complex gadgets. These visuals not only made the content more comprehensible but also sparked discussions among the students.

Connecting Theory to Daily Life:

One of the most critical aspects of effective teaching is bridging the gap between theory and practice. To help the students see the relevance of the topic in their daily lives, I encouraged them to think about how electricity and electrical equipment are integral to their routines. We discussed how they use electrical devices at home, school, and in their hobbies. This exercise not only made the lesson more relatable but also allowed the students to appreciate the practical applications of what they were learning.

Review Questions and Follow-up Activities:

To gauge their understanding and encourage active participation, I included review questions at the end of the lesson. Here are some sample questions:

What is electricity, and why is it essential in our daily lives?

Can you name three common electrical appliances and explain how they work?

Describe a situation in which you had to troubleshoot an electrical problem at home or school.

I also assigned a follow-up activity to reinforce the concepts taught in class. Students were asked to create a poster illustrating the safe use of electrical equipment at home. This activity not only reinforced their understanding of the subject but also promoted safety awareness.

Motivational Talk:

During a free hour, I had the opportunity to address another class. I used this time to provide motivation and encouragement to the students. I shared personal anecdotes and stories of perseverance to inspire them to pursue their dreams with dedication and resilience. It was a rewarding experience to witness their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.

In conclusion, my seventh day of teaching practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom was filled with valuable experiences and lessons. Engaging students with multimedia resources, connecting theory to daily life, and incorporating review questions and follow-up activities were effective teaching strategies. Additionally, the motivational talk allowed me to connect with another group of students on a personal level. This day served as a reminder of the profound impact that effective teaching can have on students' lives and reinforced my passion for education
