My Journey as a Student Teacher: Teaching Practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom
As a student teacher, the journey through teaching practice can be both exhilarating and challenging. Each day presents new opportunities to learn, adapt, and grow. One particular day that stands out in my teaching practice experience at St. Mary's Higher Secondary School, Pattom, was the 22nd day. On this day, I had the privilege of teaching a physics lesson to class 9, focusing on digital multimeters, using engaging videos and images to capture the students' interest and attention.
The Classroom Experience:
The 22nd day marked a significant point in my teaching journey. I was assigned the first period, which meant that I had the responsibility to set the tone for the day. The topic for the day was the digital multimeter, a subject that can seem complex to students. To make it more engaging, I decided to incorporate multimedia elements into my teaching approach. I used interesting videos and images to demonstrate the working of a multimeter in a real-world context. This not only made the subject more relatable but also sparked curiosity among the students.
Review Questions and Follow-Up Activities:
After explaining the concepts, it was crucial to assess the students' understanding. I prepared a set of review questions that ranged from basic to more advanced, ensuring that all students could participate and challenge themselves. These questions included:
What is the purpose of a digital multimeter?
Name the different measurement functions a multimeter can perform.
Explain the steps involved in measuring voltage using a multimeter.
Can you differentiate between an analog and a digital multimeter?
These questions not only tested their knowledge but also encouraged critical thinking and application of the concepts they had just learned.
For follow-up activities, I designed a hands-on experiment where students had the opportunity to use multimeters to measure different electrical parameters in a controlled environment. This practical exercise helped solidify their understanding of the subject matter and fostered a sense of exploration and discovery.
Health Education Lesson Plan:
In addition to teaching physics, I had another important task for the day – preparing a health education lesson plan. This task allowed me to diversify my teaching skills and knowledge. I created a comprehensive lesson plan focusing on topics such as nutrition, exercise, and stress management. It was designed to be interactive and engaging, with activities that encouraged student participation and discussions on leading a healthy lifestyle.
Maintaining Class Discipline:
Throughout the day, I also played a crucial role in maintaining class discipline during free hours. It was not just about ensuring a quiet classroom but also creating a positive and respectful learning environment. I encouraged students to respect one another's opinions and actively participate in discussions, making the classroom a place where everyone felt valued and heard.
Conclusion:
The 22nd day of my teaching practice at St. Mary's HSS Pattom was a memorable experience filled with challenges and opportunities for growth. It reinforced the importance of innovative teaching methods, student engagement, and maintaining classroom discipline. This day served as a reminder of why I chose to become an educator – to inspire and empower students to explore the world of knowledge and become lifelong learners. As I continue my journey, I look forward to more such experiences that shape me into a better teacher
