My Teaching Internship Journey: Day 4 at St. John's Model HSS, Nalanchira

As a student teacher, every day of my teaching internship at St. John's Model Higher Secondary School in Nalanchira has been a unique learning experience. On the fourth day of my journey, I had the privilege of teaching Class 9 physics, focusing on graphical representations and the use of ICT aids in the classroom. This day was particularly exciting as it marked my first interaction with the students in the capacity of a teacher.

The Classroom Setup:

Before delving into the day's activities, it's essential to provide context. St. John's Model HSS boasts state-of-the-art classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards and computers, making it an ideal environment for integrating technology into the teaching process. The Class 9 physics classroom was no exception.

The Lesson Plan:

The primary objective of the day was to teach the students the basic steps for drawing graphs, emphasizing graphical representation in physics. I decided to use ICT aids to enhance engagement and understanding. Here's an overview of my lesson plan:

1. Introduction to Graphs:

Began the class with a brief introduction to the importance of graphs in physics.

Discussed how graphs help visualize relationships between variables.

2. Steps for Drawing Graphs:

Presented the essential steps for drawing graphs, including selecting appropriate scales, labeling axes, plotting points, and drawing the line of best fit.

Used visual aids on the interactive whiteboard to illustrate each step.

3. Practical Demonstration:

Conducted a practical demonstration by plotting a simple distance-time graph on the whiteboard.

Encouraged students to actively participate and offer suggestions.

4. Student Engagement:

Provided opportunities for students to try drawing their own graphs on the whiteboard, fostering hands-on learning.

Encouraged questions and discussions throughout the session.

5. ICT Integration:

Utilized the school's ICT resources to showcase real-world examples of graphs related to physics concepts.

Showed how technology can aid in data collection and graph plotting.

Review Questions and Follow-up Activity:

To gauge the students' comprehension of the topic, I concluded the session with review questions and a follow-up activity:

Review Questions:

What are the essential steps for drawing a graph?

Why is graphical representation crucial in physics?

Provide an example of a real-world situation where a graph can be used to represent data.

Follow-up Activity:

Assigned homework where students had to collect data and create their own graphs.

Promoted critical thinking by asking students to analyze and interpret their graphs.

Peer Observation with Anu Roy:

In addition to teaching, I had the opportunity to support my batchmate, Anu Roy, in her peer observation. We collaborated to provide constructive feedback to each other, sharing insights and suggestions for improvement.

Conclusion:

The fourth day of my teaching internship at St. John's Model HSS in Nalanchira was a fulfilling experience. Teaching Class 9 physics and incorporating ICT aids into the lesson allowed me to witness the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students. It reaffirmed my passion for teaching and the importance of engaging teaching methods. The peer observation session with Anu Roy added a valuable dimension to my learning, emphasizing the significance of collaboration and continuous improvement in the teaching profession. I eagerly look forward to the next day of my teaching journey, brimming with enthusiasm and dedication.
